Attacks on Indian cabbies: mission to raise issue with Australia

Sydney, 27.05.2008 (IANS): Concerned at recent attacks on Indian cabbies, mostly students, the Indian envoy in Australia is keeping a “close watch” on the situation and has taken up the matter with authorities here who have assured they will resolve the issue.

“The attacks on Indian cab drivers are causing a great deal of concern, not only among students and their families, but the larger Indian community in Australia. We are keeping a very close watch on the situation both in Melbourne and Adelaide,” Indian High Commissioner in Canberra Sujatha Singh told IANS Monday.

Ten years after Pokhran N-Test, turnaround in Australia-India ties

Sydney, 15.05.2008 (IANS): Australia-India bilateral relations have a whiff of spring about them as the two countries strive to take the relationship to a “new level” 10 years after the frosty snapping of defence ties in the wake of the 1998 Pokhran nuclear test.

The Labour government wants to make the India relationship a priority, adding “depth and vigour” to it. One of the three pillars of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s foreign policy is “a comprehensive and revitalised engagement with Asia”, a far cry from the ousted John Howard-led Conservative government’s United States-centric approach.

From uranium to naan, India-Australia business links growing

Sydney, (IANS): While dining at the plush Oberoi Hotel in the Indian capital New Delhi, you probably didn’t know the hot tandoori chicken and naan on your platter was from an Australian-made oven. But Brisbane-based Beech Ovens that has been selling tandoori ovens to India is just one example of the growing economic ties between the two countries.

“The success of Australia’s long-term engagement with India will rely heavily on the commercial links built up by Australian businesses,” stressed Federal Minister for Trade Warren Truss Wednesday while delivering the Australia India Business Council (AIBC) Accor-Qantas India Independence Day speech on “Breaking new ground” in Adelaide.
